This page contains a list of
events and activities that are available in the Washington DC
Metropolitan area through
institutions and individuals
not typically associated with the NCAC. An attempt has been made to
identify sources that offer activities and events that are aimed at the
cub scouting community and especially those that help fulfill
requirements towards scouting achievements and awards. This compilation
should not be considered to be complete or comprehensive. These
opportunities are dependant upon the institutions and individuals who
offer them and may not be available all the time and may in fact become
unavailable at any time.
This compilation is offered as a
resource to Scouting leaders in the spirit of information sharing and
developing quality programs for our Scouts. The commentary provided is
my own opinion and is in no way an endorsement by the BSA or NCAC.
Please research these ideas on your own and determine whether they are
appropriate for your group. If there are any ideas you have found
to be meaningful and fun please feel free to contact me at
pack689scouter@aol.com and I
will add them to the list.

Activities
Mt
Vernon - A fantastic historical site in
Northern Virginia that offers great insight to colonial America
and our first president. Mt Vernon has been consistently
successful at providing Scouts meaningful, hands-on
opportunities. In the past they have offered patriotic events
such as Wreath layings on Washington's tomb to hands-on learning
experiences such as farming, surveying and archaeological
events.
Harpers Ferry - This very historical town is
situated on the borders of West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland,
as well as, the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers,
which creates some very dramatic scenery. In addition to the
sites of the old town itself, the Appalachian Trail and C&O
Canal intersect here offering an opportunity for young Scouts to
hike some significant American trails with minimal exertion and
earn the AT and C&O Patches. Check the Park's event calendars
for the Civil War reenactments. The Scouts love the artillery!
Ft McHenry
- As the inspiration of our National Anthem, this
site outside of Baltimore, Maryland has a lot to offer. Scouts
can participate in the Flag raising ceremony and have an
opportunity to tour the fort. Contact the Rangers here before
you go, they are a great help and make sure to ask to see the
huge flag stored in the fort.
National Building Museum - This museum goes
to great efforts to put together programs aimed at the Scouting
community. Schedule early, even a year ahead! The House building
and Bridge building activities are huge favorites of the Webelos.
The Bealeton
Flying Circus - An aerial circus featuring
airplanes from the past, stunts, wing-walking and parachuting.
There are camping facilities right at the airfield and they
welcome scouts. Located in Bealeton, Virginia, the Flying Circus
offers scouting events throughout their Spring through Fall
season.
Other
Opportunities
The Pocket
Flag Project -
A great opportunity to teach boys
about patriotism and community unity! If implemented
with thought, by the time this project has been
completed the Scouts in your group will never forget how
to fold a flag or forget about the deep reverence we
should have for this great symbol. The Pocket Flag
Project is a very unique project that can get the whole
pack involved.
The
United States Heritage Award - This
beautiful medal can help your Scouts to develop a
greater understanding and pride in our country. Our Pack
combined a trip to Ft McHenry and the Pocket Flag
Project with the requirements of this medal to create a
deep experience for the Scouts and their families.
