Driver's Licenses

Active duty armed forces personnel, spouses and dependent children, over age 16, may drive with a valid driver's license issued by your state of official residence. Vehicles registered under active duty sponsor's name may be driven with valid out-of-state license plates. If dependents become employed here, or vehicle is registered locally, a local driver's license is mandatory.

Driving in the Metro Area

High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes. Freeways and heavily-traveled roadways (routes 66 and 395, for example) in the metropolitan area display HOV signs with a large diamond symbol. These lanes are restricted to vehicles with a minimum number of occupants, during certain hours. Restrictions vary and are subject to change. HOV lanes are carefully monitored by police and failure to obey restrictions can result in fines.

    Each year at Christmas, USO-Metro, working in conjunction with the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association of Washington, provides hundreds of donated hotel rooms for visiting family members of personnel station in the Washington/Baltimore metropolitan area. (703) 696-3279

  • "Safe-T-First"
    GEICO donates infant and toddler child safety seats for USO-Metro to loan to enlisted parents for six months so they may "buckle-up baby." (703) 696-2552
  • Ticketline
    The USO-Metro Ticketline ((703) 696-2551), distributes tickets free of charge to active duty personnel and their families; priority is given to enlisted personnel. There is a limit of two ticket requests per month. The 24-hour ticketline recording can provide you with ticket availability on the area's most sought after theater, sports, and cultural events. The ticketline depends upon donated tickets. You may donate tickets by calling (703) 696-2552; your donation is tax deductible.

Food Stamps

Military families may be eligible to participate in the food stamp program. Eligibility is based on total family income and size of family. Individual must contact the county in which the local residence is located.

TRICARE (DoD Health Care Program)


TRICARE is the healthcare program for Active Duty and retired personnel, their families and their survivors. The Washington Metropolitan area falls under the TRICARE Northeast Region, managed by Sierra Military Health Services, Inc.

Eligibility: Each military sponsor is responsible for enrolling family members in the DEERS before they seek medical care. Military clinic clerks perform a full DEERS computer check for eligibility each time a patient accesses healthcare in a military facility. Patients who are ineligible for care will not receive service.

Public School Information

Kindergarten is not compulsory in the Greater Washington area, and some areas have limited kindergartens.

Entrance requirements: Proof of vaccination and birth certificate. Medical forms are to be filled out concerning other immunizations. Note: New students in most local school systems must have a physical & dental examination, proof of residence and social security number.

Transfer requirements: Latest report card or transfer forms, medical forms and birth certificate.
